Since about 1850 in this country, glassworkers have been creating glass paperweights. In Southern Jersey factories, paperweights were made by as a “whimsey” or “end-of-day” piece. Friends and family received these as treasures.

A clear crystal dome magnifies air bubbles or colored elements such as flowers and spirals. These are typical of early South Jersey weights. Handcast animal figurines became popular novelties in the early 20th century.

At WheatonArts, our resident artists continue the southern New Jersey tradition of paperweight making with both classic and modern designs.
