SUMMARY:Beginner Glassblowing Weekend Intensive
DESCRIPTION:In this two-day glassblowing intensive\, students will begin with the basics and learn to safely work in a hot shop with molten glass. An experienced instructor will guide students as they learn to gather from the furnace\, use hand tools\, and create solid and blown forms in clear glass. Day one will be packed with demonstrations\, active learning\, and hands-on instruction. Students will practice by making marbles and “caterpillars” and will create a clear paperweight with a funky bubble design. By the end of the first day\, students will learn to inflate glass\, making a blown air plant terrarium. Day two will focus more on blown forms. With guidance\, students will create a salt cellar or candy bowl\, and a small clear bud vase. By the end of the weekend\, students will have a solid base to build upon hot glass skills. \n  \nStudents must wear closed-toe shoes and be ready for active participation\, safety glasses will be provided by the studio\, and all students are expected to stay for the duration of both class days. SUMMARY:Jewelry Design: Carmella's Crochet
DESCRIPTION:In this one-session class\, students will create a woven bead wristlet using glass beads\, pearls\, and/or semi-precious stones. Off-loom bead weaving is a technique that uses string and a needle to weave beads into a flat fabric\, a tube\, or a three-dimensional object. Students will need to have basic crochet skills\, which include the ability to create a chain stitch. Building on this skill\, the class teaches a flat crochet technique created by the teacher to include pearls\, glass beads\, and semi-precious stones in a crochet necklace and or double-wrapped bracelet. \nAll necessary materials and tools are provided. A base kit will be provided and is included in the class fee. Opportunities to upgrade your kit for an extra charge will be available during the class meeting. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on weaving class and create your own New Jersey-style basket\, inspired by the traditional craftsmanship of the Archer family from Archertown\, NJ. This unique pic ’n’ basket design is native to New Jersey and reflects the rich history of local basket-making families. \nIn this class\, you’ll start by constructing the base using the 8 over 8 method\, then proceed with a continuous weave. You’ll also add a bonnet handle and finish with a traditional rim and lashing technique. The finished basket will be approximately 10 inches in diameter and 8 inches high (excluding the handle). \nAll levels of weaving experience are welcome. SUMMARY:Next Steps in Glassblowing
DESCRIPTION:A strong foundation is key to developing thoughtful and technically refined pieces when glass blowing in the hot shop. This workshop will emphasize the importance of building positive habits and solid hand skills. Students will focus on gathering glass\, wall thickness\, speed\, ergonomics\, and heat in order to create well-designed and elegant vessels. This course will emphasize individual attention and instruction divided between demonstrations and supervised work time. This class is ideal for students who have minimal to basic glassblowing skills\, not for true beginners. Students should have taken at least one beginning glassblowing class prior to this course. \n*Registration includes access to Student Open Blow on Friday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. during the run time of the class. \n  \n Wednesday Instruction: October 16 to November 20 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. \nFriday Student Open Blow (optional): October 18 to November 22\, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. \nClass Duration: 6 sessions\, 18 hours total\, 18 hours of Student Open Blow \nLocation: Glass Studio \nPet Policy: Visitors are NOT permitted to bring pets into the WheatonArts campus. DESCRIPTION:Open Blow is a chance for you to work on your glass-blowing skills in a relaxed\, collaborative setting. These sessions provide a chance for you to stay connected to hot glass and your previous classmates. The sessions are running alongside our regular classes. Open Blow sessions must be purchased as they are listed. It is not possible to pick only a few dates.
