SUMMARY:Introduction to Glassblowing
DESCRIPTION:We all have to start somewhere! This course will introduce students to beginning glassblowing techniques and proper studio safety practices. Students will learn to gather glass\, learn about the proper usage of glassblowing tools\, how to create basic shapes and glass-blown forms\, and how to work in a team setting. Class time will be divided between demonstrations and supervised work time. This course is designed for students with no experience or very minimal knowledge of glassblowing skills. In this hands-on workshop\, you’ll be guided through the practical steps of carving and decorating your own luminary. A luminary is a ceramic object that can be used to hold a candle. \nUnder Phyllis’s experienced direction\, learn the techniques to turn a pre-thrown raw clay object into a personalized luminary. Get your hands dirty with carving and adding intricate designs that give your piece a distinct touch. Experiment with the details of embellishment\, enhancing the overall look and turning your luminary into a functional work of art. \nTo finalize your project\, choose a glaze that suits your style. This course will emphasize individual attention and instruction divided between demonstrations and supervised work time. This class is ideal for students who have minimal to basic glassblowing skills\, not for true beginners. SUMMARY:Introduction to Pysanky
DESCRIPTION:Explore the art\, symbolism\, and joy in creating pysanky\,  a springtime Ukrainian tradition of decorating real eggshells. Students will learn the age-old method of applying hot beeswax to an emptied eggshell using a stylus\, over a succession of dye baths. When the pattern is completed\, the wax is removed over a candle flame\, revealing the colors and pattern. This pysanka\, or Ukrainian Easter egg\, can then be displayed on a stand or hung as an ornament. Materials\, supplies\, and instruction will be provided to complete one or two eggs.
